saffron skies is a small sustainable business handcrafting unique, one-of-a-kind goods from vintage and repurposed materials

We give a new life to quality fabrics that would otherwise be sent to landfill and allow them to be used and loved again for years to come.

All of our packaging is plastic-free and recyclable. We even save our tiny offcuts to make patchwork and scraps cards to truly stay as zero-waste as possible!

Our themed collections are inspired by the fabrics we find, creating an unusual dynamic where we work with what we have available rather than purchasing new materials for every new idea or trend. This aligns best with our belief that everyone should make-do and mend before buying new and we think it creates the most interesting and unique results!

the face behind the brand

Saffron Skies was founded by Lucy Howell, a creative designer with a huge interest in sustainable living. Having taught herself to sew in her early teens, she began learning how to make her own clothes and upcycle second hand garments. Developing these skills alongside her Art Foundation and degree in Product Design Engineering she was able to understand how to make products that are not only beautiful but also functional.

After becoming vegan in 2016 for environmental reasons and learning more about the ethical issues within the fashion industry and greenwashing, she decided to use her design skills and environmental awareness to launch Saffron Skies in early 2020.

Every single item is handcrafted in her West Yorkshire studios or in Cheshire through collaborations with local artists and talented family and friends.
